Intro to Yoga Workshop
Yoga meets you where you're at.
Where you're at is exactly where you should be
This 90 minute workshop will help you overcome the intimidation that may be holding you back from starting a life changing yoga practice. Discover the many benefits of yoga: improve your balance, flexibility and relieve stress. Basic yoga poses will be broken down and demonstrated, slowly and clearly in a supportive, motivating environment.
- Learn how a regular practice of yoga poses, meditation & breathing techniques can help manage
stress & improve your health
- Learn how to modify fundamental yoga poses to suit YOUR body
- Basic poses will be taught with a focus on proper alignment using blocks, straps, bolsters & blankets
- The Instructor will demonstrate a pose first while students watch. You will then practice the pose.
- Questions may be asked before, during and after the class
This class will prepare you for any of our yoga classes other than Yoga Flow which is more challenging and requires experience.
Although not a requirement, this workshop is a great opportunity to learn basic Yoga poses and breathing techniques before attending a regular class.
Suzanne is an international advocate for inclusive, non judgmental, supportive yoga classes for ALL BODIES. She is a pioneer in Plus Size Fitness and created the FIRST plus size yoga class in North America in 2002. She specializes in Beginner, Plus Size and Senior yoga and teaches a variety of classes including Hatha, Restorative and Yin. Yoga for Anxiety & Depression Workshop Series
Led by FitZonePLUS Owner, Suzanne Gracan, this 6 week series will teach you simple and practical tools for
healing and managing anxiety and depression
We all know intuitively we would enjoy life, be more relaxed and healthier if we could restore calm and balance in our system. 1 in 4 people will experience anxiety and/or depression in their lifetime and the World Health Organization (WHO) lists depression as the 4th largest health problem world wide.
Anxiety and depression affect behavior, thoughts, emotions and physical health. Anxiety may arise in response to a real event or become an anxiety disorder which produces chronic fear or distress out of proportion to a situation.
Depression infiltrates all levels of our being. People who become depressed often experience fatigue, lethargy, sleep disturbances, digestive issues, and decreased pleasure.
People with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) may experience a combination of anxiety and depression along with other troubling symptoms such as flashbacks and a highly reactive, hyper vigilant nervous system.
In this practical workshop series, you will learn and practice simple breathing techniques, yoga poses and deep relaxation. These are practices proven to decrease cortisol, increase feel-good hormones, regulate the endocrine system and stimulate the vagus nerve. They calm the sympathetic nervous system while activating the parasympathetic nervous system (the relaxation response). They elevate mood, balance right and left brain function, cultivate equanimity and release repressed emotions stored in the body. Mindfulness along with working skilfully with thought and the mind help us to see things as they are without misperception, ruminating or obsessive negative thinking.
It is natural to feel anxious at first however people find this fades significantly after the first session. People find that attending sessions regularly with the same group can be a very therapeutic and healing experience. Participants will leave with guided practices and tools to assist in deep and lasting transformation. Everyone is welcome. No prior knowledge or skills are required.
In each class you will experience:
• Breathing techniques that can still the mind and ease anxiety
• Yoga postures, both active and restorative, that restore and reset the nervous and glandular systems bringing joy, vitality,
sound sleep and confidence back into your life
• Mantra and meditations that help to transform negative thought patterns
• Teachings that reframe the mainstream conversations on mental health and wellness and inspire self-love and self-
• 30 minutes will be spent on theory and 30 minutes practicing what we have learned.
Each week participants will explore powerful yogic tools and techniques for healing depression and managing anxiety around food, body image, relationships, money, work, and more.
